The class 221 locomotives were a great success for the German Federal Railroad. For a long time they were responsible for a majority of the non-electrified traffic; in the north of the West Germany they were almost indispensable. However, compared to other classes, these proven locomotives had a second life ahead of them after being taken out of service. Many units also found their way to Greece where they were used for a long time. After their service under the Mediterranean sun, in 2002 the remaining locomotives were purchased by the PEG, transported to Germany and were overhauled for service.
